Hello, and welcome to DALnet!  The most friendly IRC network out there! The help file you have before you has been created to help familiarize yourself with the three DALnet services that make DALnet so unique and give us that edge over the other IRC networks.

NickServ - Allows DALnet users to register nicknames.
ChanServ - Allows DALnet users to register chat channels under their registered nicknames. MemoServ - Allows DALnet users to send memos to other registered users, even if they aren't online!

Now that you have a brief understanding of the DALnet services, let the fun begin!

3.0 - Thanks

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Most examples will have the symbols < > around commands. Don't type this brackets in when using the DALnet services. If you do, you will get a improper syntax error.  Thanks!

The /ChanServ and /NickServ commands are two shortcuts (or aliases) for the commands /msg ChanServ and /msg NickServ.  If your IRC client does not support them, or shows something like: ChanServ Unknown command NickServ Unknown command Use /msg ChanServ or /quote ChanServ instead of /ChanServ, and /msg NickServ or /quote NickServ instead of /NickServ.

It is much better to use /ChanServ and /NickServ because a mistyped /msg command may accidentally go to another user.

Section I:  Services

1.1 - Services in more detail

Services are what gives DALnet the edge over most other IRC networks. The DALnet services allow users to actually own and control their nicknames and channels via NickServ and ChanServ.  As well, users can send memos to other users via MemoServ.

The current email address of the DALnet services is service@DAL.net
The current mailing list of the DALnet services is dalnet-services@dal.net

NickServ provides nickname registration and enforcement/protection.  The owner of a registered nickname can manually kill anyone using his or her nickname or configure NickServ to do it automatically.  However to use the other DALnet services ChanServ and MemoServ, you must have your nick registered with NickServ.

ChanServ provides channel registration.  The person who registers a channel (known as the "founder") can control what modes are allowed on the channel, who are channel operators, as well as other easily customised options and settings.

MemoServ allows registered users to send and receive memos from other registered users. MemoServ memos are short in length and are stored for retrieval.

HelpServ provides the standard ircII help service.  Note that HelpServ cannot be accessed correctly by all chat clients.

DALnet was the first IRC network to have such services (excluding HelpServ). Services allows users of DALnet to stop or prevent channel takeovers, nick collides, and nickname ownership fights.  This allows the users of DALnet to better enjoy it's resources and lets the IRC operators to have more time for their tasks.

Please remember that DALnet services are unique to DALnet.  Other IRC networks might claim to have the same services, but they are not the same; DALnet's services are not on any other net.  Other similar services are only copycats.

1.2 - NickServ:  How do I register my nick?

To register your nick, first think of a nick that best suits you and one that you will use and like.  Make sure that the nick you choose is not registered by someone else.
/nickserv info <nick>

To change to the nick you want. Type....... /nick <nick>
Example: To change your nick to IconOfSin, type..... /nick IconOfSin

Once your have selected your nick, to register it please type..... /NickServ register <password> Please do not type <password> for your password.  Please select a word or a number that you will remember. WRITE DOWN AND REMEMBER YOUR NICKSERV PASSWORD!

For example, to register the nick IconOfSin with the password LaBlueGirl,
I would type..... /nick IconOfSin   /NickServ register LaBlueGirl

If you run into the message, asking for you to identify yourself to NickServ, and the nick you have chosen is registered.  Be calm, and simply change your nick to a new one.  If you need any more assistance, please join #dalnethelp and ask for some help.  They will be glad to assist you. To join #dalnethelp, type..... /join #dalnethelp

1.3 - NickServ: How do I stop others from using my registered nickname?

There is a feature that NickServ has which automatically gives users with unfamiliar domain address, to enter your NickServ password within a time limit of 60 secs or NickServ will automically disconnect them off DALnet. Once, your nick has been registered with NickServ. Type the following command to set nick enforce on, type......... /msg NickServ set enforce on

1.4 - NickServ: How do I get rid of my ghost?

A "ghost" is what happens when a server thinks a user is still on IRC even after they have left.  Those should get automatically disconnected with the quit message saying "ping timeout".  This will take a few minutes, so NickServ has a command for getting rid of your ghosts (for registered nicknames). To do so, type...... /NickServ ghost <nick> <password>

The nick is the nickname of the ghost, and the password is your current NickServ password.

1.5 - NickServ: How do I access information on a registered nick?

Looking for information on a certain nickname?  If the nickname is registered with DALnet, you can access and view information on the nick. To do so, type...... /NickServ info <nick> Replace <nick> with the nickname you wish to read about.

1.6 - NickServ: How do I change my registered nick password?

To change your nick password you must first identify yourself with NickServ. To do so,
type..... /NickServ identify <password> Then after you have done this, type the following to change your password. /NickServ set passwd <new password> REMEMBER YOUR CHANGED PASSWORD.  If you have your password written down, make a note of the change.

1.7 - NickServ: How do I prevent MemoServ memos from being sent to my nick?

You can enable a feature which will stop any memos from MemoServ being sent to your registered nickname.  This feature is excellent for users who are going on vacation and would not like to have their MemoServ list build up with memos. To enable this option, type.... /NickServ set nomemo on
To turn this feature off, type... /NickServ set nomemo off

1.8 - NickServ: How can I confirm someone's legality though NickServ?

NickServ now has a command you can use to vertify someone though services. This command is knows as "acc" and depending on the sitution can provide you with four different access levels.  Each access level will be explained in a easy to read table. Please note, the nickname are you vertifying must be registered with NickServ.  To use the acc command, type... /NickServ acc <registered nickname>

NickServ should reply to you with this via notice: -NickServ- ACC <nickname> <access level> There are only four possible number replies you can get from this command. Below is a list of each one and what they exactly mean.
0 = no such nick registered
1 = not identified with NickServ or not online
2 = identified through access mask list
3 = identified with password

1.9 - NickServ: How Do I delete my registered nick?

First you must identify yourself to NickServ, to do this, type... /msg NickServ identify <password> After that, type.... /msg NickServ drop <nick> Please note that once you have dropped or deleted your nick, it's up for grabs via new ownership by anyone.

1.10 - ChanServ: How do I register my channel?

First off, you must join the channel you want to register. There are three requirements that must be met to register a channel:
1. Channel not currently registered
2. User's current nickname must be registered with NickServ
3. User must have channel operator status
Once all three requirements have been met, you can registered your channel by typing this..... /msg ChanServ register #<channelname> <password> <channel description>
<channelname> should be replaced with the name of the channel you wish to register wish to register with NickServ.  <password> is the password you wish to use for your channel registration.  And <channel description> is a brief description that describes your channel.

For example, to register the channel #PlanetDALnet with the password 1234, and the channel description "PlanetDALnet is here", you would type.......
/msg ChanServ #PlanetDALnet 1234 PlanetDALnet is here

1.11 - ChanServ: How do I permanently set channel modes?

Channel modes are modes that allow the current channel operator to customize the channel environment to his/her liking.  However, when all users have left the channel, the channel modes are deleted from memory and must be re-set when a channel operator joins.  To fix this problem, ChanServ has the feature mlock.

To use mode lock, simply type..... /msg ChanServ set #<channelname> mlock +<modes> For example, to set the channel, #PlanetDALnet with the modes +n and +t, you would type..... /msg ChanServ set #PlanetDALnet mlock +tn For more information on channel modes type /msg helpserv mode or /help mode if you have mIRC. Or you can also visit #dalnethelp for more information on channel modes.

1.12 - ChanServ: How do I add aop's/sop's?

To add automatic channel operators or super channel operators, you must first identify yourself to ChanServ, by
typing..... /ChanServ identify #<channelname> <Channel password>
After you have done this, type the following to add a aop to your channel.
/ChanServ AOP #<channelname> ADD <registered nick or domain>

For example, to add someone to the #PlanetDALnet aop list, I would
type...... /ChanServ AOP #PlanetDALnet ADD IconOfSin

To add someone to the channel sop list,
type....... /ChanServ SOP #<channelname> ADD <registered nick or domain>

The same example applies to the sop, just replace the aop with sop.

1.13 - ChanServ: How do I delete aop's and sop's?

This one will take some time to learn, however once you have learned it, it's *very* easy.  First, you must list your aop's or sop's depending on which kind of operator you wish to delete. To list your registered channels aop's,
type..... /ChanServ AOP #<channelname> LIST

To list your registered channels sop's, type...... /ChanServ SOP #<channelname> LIST

You should get a list like the following.......
-ChanServ- AutoOp search results for channel #PlanetDALnet
-ChanServ-    5 webcat (overall@kelly.teleport.com)
-ChanServ-    4 MaidMoron (maidm@king.cts.com)
-ChanServ-    3 Ultimate (forestt@mark205.fn.net)
-ChanServ-    2 Alaranth (Rogue@sd0.dreamscape.com)
-ChanServ-    1 MrPuppy (dkm3@Port9.TS1.MsState.Edu)
-ChanServ-    [5 match(es) found]

Now, you once you have your list simply, type the following command and replace the # with the number of the aop or sop you wish to delete from your list.
/ChanServ AOP #<channelname> DEL <number>

For example, to delete Ultimate from the #PlanetDALnet channel list, I would
type...... /ChanServ AOP #PlanetDALnet DEL 3

Do the same set of instructions in deleting sop's. Just replace the word aop with sop.

1.14 - ChanServ: How do I change my registered channel's password?

To change your channel password you must first get identified founder access on the channel. To do so, type..... /ChanServ identify #channelname <password>

Then after you have done this, type the following to change your password.
/ChanServ set #channelname passwd <new password>

REMEMBER YOUR CHANGED PASSWORD.  If you have your password written down, make a note of the change.

1.15 - ChanServ: How do I drop my registered channel?

First you must identify yourself with ChanServ as being the channel founder. To do this, type...... /ChanServ identify #<channelname> <password>

After doing this, type this and can we say "Sayanora, Channel!?"
/ChanServ drop #<channelname>

Please note that once you have dropped or deleted your channel, it's up for grabs via new ownership by anyone.

1.16 - ChanServ: How do I access information on a registered channel?

To access information on a registered channel.  Simply
type...... /ChanServ info #<channelname>

To get information on the channel, say, #PlanetDALnet, I would
type..... /ChanServ info #PlanetDALnet

1.17 - MemoServ: How do I send memos?

To send memos via MemoServ both users need to have their nicknames registered. To check if a user's nick is registered..... /NickServ info <nick>

If you get information on the nick you entered from NickServ then they are registered and you can send memos to them.  If they aren't, please tell them to register their nickname.

To send a memo to another registered user, type..... /MemoServ send <nick> <memo body>

For example, to send a memo to the user IconOfSin about a meeting at #PlanetDALnet, you would type..... /MemoServ send IconOfSin Hey, meet me at #PlanetDALnet at 7:00pm, later.

1.18 - MemoServ: How do I send memos to groups, such as channel aop/sops?

You can send channel-wide memos to your aop/sops.  MemoServ is robust enough to allow either a channel-wide memo to all aops, sops and the channel founder or only the channel founder and channel sops.

To send a channel-wide memo to the channel founder and all aops and sops.
Type.... /MemoServ send #<channelname> <memo body>

Please note, to send a channel-wide memo to a channel, you must be a aop, sop or the channel founder of that channel.  This command will not work if you are not.

To send a channel memo to only the channel founder and all sops.
Type.... /MemoServ sendsop #<channelname> <memo body>

Please note, to use the sendsop command, you must be a aop, sop or the channel founder of that channel.  This command will not work if you are not.

1.19 - *MemoServ: How do I read my memos?

First, you will have to list your memos, to do so, type...... /MemoServ list

Once doing this, you should get a listing like this.....
-MemoServ- Memo list for IconOfSin: To read, use command: READ <num>
-MemoServ-    *6 Jokke                    Wed 10/02/96 11:20:32 CDT
-MemoServ-     5 Merlyn                   Mon 09/30/96 09:14:53 CDT
-MemoServ-     4 AngelicPraise            Sun 09/29/96 15:32:06 CDT
-MemoServ-     3 Kriss                    Sun 09/29/96 15:31:22 CDT
-MemoServ-     2 LaBlueGirl               Sun 09/29/96 11:09:08 CDT
-MemoServ-     1 Cabal95                  Sun 09/29/96 11:08:32 CDT
-MemoServ- End of list

Any numbers or memos with a * by them means that memo has not been read yet. To read it, type..... /MemoServ read <number>

For example, for me to read my new memo from Jokke, I would type..... /MemoServ read 6

1.20 - MemoServ: How do I delete memos?

To delete memos, first you must select which memos are to be mark for deletion.  To do so, type.... /MemoServ del #  (# = Number of memo) then to delete the marked memos,
type.. /MemoServ purge

1.21 - MemoServ: Can I delete my memos in groups or all at once?

Yes, you can.  MemoServ contains a feature which allows you to mark all your memos for deletion and then purge them. To do so, type.... /MemoServ del all Please note, this command will purge all your memos without asking you beforehand.  Once a memo is purged, it cannot be undeleted by any means. Keep this note in mind when using this command.

Section II: Other Useful and Helpful Information

2.0 - What's a aop and a sop?

A aop stands for Auto OP who are users that will get automatically opped by ChanServ as soon as they join your channel, if you choose to add them to your aop list.  Aop's have basic channel operator status.  However, they can't add aop's or sop's or add users to the AKICK list.

A sop stands for Super OP who are users that will get automatically opped by ChanServ as soon as they join your channel, if you choose to add them to your sop list.  Sop's have basic channel operator status as well the ability to add new aop's and to add users to the AKICK list.

Remember, please be very careful with whom you trust with operator status.

try.... MemoServ: /MemoServ help or /msg MemoServ help <command>
ChanServ: /ChanServ help or /msg ChanServ help <command>
NickServ: /NickServ help or /msg NickServ help <command>

2.2 - Other areas and sources of information

If you want more information on DALnet, IRC and it's services, visit the DALnet world web site at http://www.dal.net

For information on DALnet services, visit. http://www.dal.net/services

To download software to connect to DALnet and other stuff.  Access the DALnet
ftp site at: ftp://ftp.dal.net (Main FTP site)
ftp://ftp.dal.net/dalnet/clients (Client Software Directory)

2.3 - What do I do if I forgot my nick or channel password?

First make sure you do not know it. Remember that passwords are CaSe SeNsitive (SiLLy is not the same as silly). And if you used <> or "" or any special characters around your password when you registered, use them again in the identify command.

If none of that works, please visit #Operhelp and ask for a csop when a chanop modes you +v. To get a listing of current csop's, type..... /motd services.*

All CSops are IRC operators.  If you are unsure whether the person is really a CSop, you can verify if they are IRC operators with the /whois command, which will display something similar to this in addition to all the other info: <nickname> is an IRC operator

If this doesn't show them as IRC operators but they claim to be, you should politely ask them to turn on their IRC operator status so you can verify it with the /whois command.

2.4 - Can I get a copy of the DALnet services?

No, DALnet services are not freeware or shareware in any shape or form. Services are programs written by the DALnet services programming team for DALnet.  It is not something the DALnet team wishes to sell or give out.

2.5 - How many nicks can I register?

You can register as many nicks via NickServ as you need.  Unused nicknames will only take up storage space and bog down services.  Please don't abuse this right for the sake of every user on DALnet, so register only those nicknames you will really use. If you register an excessive amount, you may find an Oper asking you to drop some. If you abuse services with enormous amounts of registrations you may lose all of your nicks.

2.6 - How many channels can I register?

You can register as many channels via ChanServ as you wish. Unused channels will only take up storage space and bog down services.  Please don't abuse this right for the sake of every user on DALnet. See the information on how many nicks you can register.

2.7 - Other important notes on the DALnet help channels.

Please note that the help channel #dalnethelp only deals with help on with the DALnet services and general IRC help.  DALnethelp will not help users needing help with the World Wide Web, E-Mail, etc.  If you need help with mIRC, please visit #mIRC.  Require assistance with mIRC wavs?  Drop by #mIRC_Wavsurfer.

Want to know how to use bots, write mIRC scripts, etc.  Join channels #mIRC_Scripts or #helpdesk.

As well, remember at times we can become very busy, and it may take time to answer your question.  Please ask nicely, be patient and calm. If someone has not answered you in about 3 minutes.  Please ask again. Remember, that channel operators and helpers will not answer msg's or DCC chats.  We want other users to learn from the answers of others.

2.8 - Why won't services talk to me?

DALnet services may not respond to you for many reasons.  Here are the most common ones and how to correct them.

  1. You may have misspelled /msg or ChanServ/NickServ/MemoServ

  2. If using mIRC, all message replies from ChanServ/NickServ/MemoServ are sent to your status window and not the window you are currently using.

  3. Services may be lagged on the server you are using.  If your chat software supports CTCP pinging.  You can ping services to see how lagged they are. Type /ping <service nickname>.  For example to ping NickServ type: /ping NickServ.  If you do not get a reply shortly after.  There is a good chance that services are lagged.  Please try using Services on a different server or wait until services response time improves.

  4. Services may be down or being upgraded.  In both cases, they are temporarily taken offline.  In this case, any messages sent to services will result in "service name: no suck nickname" or a similar message.  (The message will vary depending on what DALnet server you are on and what services you tried to message)

  5. Services may be ignoring you.  DALnet has had its share of troublesome users.  To protect registered channels and/or nicknames, services can ignore such troublesome users.  If services seem to being ignoring you, please e-mail kline@DAL.net.

  6. Your chat client maybe setup to ignore the old EFnet NickServ service. Check your chat software ignore list and remove any services nicks in there.  If you are using mIRC.  Try typing /ignore -r <service name>. ircII users can try typing /ignore NickServ none or /ignore NickServ -all.

  7. You may have a scripting program that automatically ignores nicknames that send you messages in quick succession (known as flooding).  If NickServ or ChanServ are on your ignore list and keeping coming back after you have removed them, this could be your problem.  For more information on disabling your flood protection scripts visit #helpdesk or #dalnethelp.

And remember if you have any problems with services.  Please join #dalnethelp and we'll do our best to have you up and running in no time.  Thanks.
